Bermuda beaches are truly unique and are well known for their subtle
pink colour.
The colouring is due in part to the presence of a one-celled organism called Foraminifera that makes its home on the reefs around the Island. Their skeletons are dark-red and the constant waves erode their shells and mix them with the white shells of other sea creatures to create the pink tinted sand on the Island's shores.
Bermuda boasts a large number of useable beaches along its shoreline. Some of the most popular beaches are found along the South Shore. South Shore Park is a park that stretches more than 2 kilometers from Horseshoe Bay to Warwick Long Bay. Between these two are several other beaches and coves including the secluded Jobson Cove.
The water is extremely clear with a beautiful aqua blue tint that you won't find in many other locations. The beaches are clean and peaceful - one of the biggest surprises to first time visitors is how quiet many of the beaches can be! It's not abnormal to cruise down to your favourite section of beach and find it nearly private (though Horseshoe Bay in particular can get quite busy during summer and prime months when there are cruise ships visiting!).
As you can imagine, there are many activities to be enjoyed by the beach including snorkeling, swimming, jogging, sun bathing or just lying around on the sand with a good book. Waves are generally fairly moderate due to the reefs surrounding the Island though during a tropical storm larger waves can be produced - sometimes allowing for some limited surfing. Waves of this size tend to be fairly rare which is why Bermuda is not really known to be a surfer's paradise.
There are lifeguards on duty at Horseshoe Bay and John Smith's Bay during the summer months but otherwise swimmers and beach goers on their own - so caution when out in the water is needed. While there is plenty to do throughout the day, all public beaches in Bermuda are closed from sunset to sunrise so don't expect to find late night beach parties or bonfires.
Due to the size of the Island, you are most likely to have access to a beach within a 5 minute scooter ride which makes a beach outing quite convenient. The temperate climate of Bermuda allows the beaches to be enjoyed for the majority of the year - it's no wonder the pink sands of Bermuda hold such appeal!
